Francis Poulenc, to whose memory this sonata is dedicated, was working on a bassoon sonata when he died, but, sadly, he did not finish it. This sonata is meant to partially fill that void. This Bassoon Sonata does not attempt to copy Poulenc's style of writing, but its motives, movement titles, harmonic patterns and formal structures do bring to mind his solo wind sonatas in many respects. The three movements together last about 12 minutes. The sample audio is taken from a studio recording of the first two movements. The sonata is quite difficult for both players, but it has been played by advanced college level students and professionals alike.
