Sonata Célebre was written in 1983 for Marilyn Mead who won the International Artist’s Competition in New York that year. She was granted a full recital in Carnegie Hall (Stern Auditorium) where it premiered to fine reviews. Following that, it was orchestrated for the International Symphony in San Diego as a concerto. With the Célebre, Marilyn won a Pompidou Fellowship to work with Pierre Boulez in Paris and a teaching position in Amsterdam.
This three movement sonata is Bohmler's first major piece for a solo instrument and has had many performances since its premiere. It is a traditional sonata form with a Theme and Variations first movement, a slow and somber second movement and a jubilant third movement which recalls the first movement in its exciting final bars.
Contents:
I. Theme and Variations
II. Lento
III. Molto allegro.
