The Sonata for clarinet and piano represents my inner feelings and personal perception of the evolution of the world.
It was my intention to use modern musical language to express these very strong personal emotions. I had also intended to write a clarinet part that would not be too difficult to play, but I may not have been altogether successfull with respect to that task. I now realize that this piece requires accomplished players. I express my gratitude to Mr. Vyacheslav Manucharyan for his valuable advice for the clarinet part. (Geghuni Chitchyan, Yerevan, June 14, 2007)
The premiere of the Sonata was given on May 9, 2006 in the Komitas Hall of Chamber Music in Yerevan at the “Spring Festival of Armenian New Music concert. Vyacheslav Manucharyan, principal clarinet of the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra and professor at the Yerevan State Conservatory, played the solo clarinet part while Geghuni Chitchyan played the piano part.
They have both played the work several times in subsequent performances, including one on November 18, 2006 at the contest for The Best Works of the Year (Hall of the Union of Armenian Composers) and another on April 27, 2007 in that same hall at the concert of the International Association of Armenian Women in Music.
