Composed by Sadie Harrison. This edition: pdf. 21st Century. 35 pages. UYMP #1265932. Published by UYMP (A0.1701844).

This brief work was written as a thank you for Wen Sun, Kirk Edwards and Carl Chudy (the Ellipsis Trio), who took the solo parts in my triple concerto missi-tuk (A River’s Journey) performed by them with the New London Community Orchestra (conducted by Kevin Bishop) in Connecticut, USA on 28 March 2025.

The piece is in 6 movements:

Wen’s Song (a simple song, light and airy)
Carl’s Cycle Ride (with a gentle lilt) '...cycling when the days are longer..the slant of the sun as it filters through the trees…'
Kirk’s Song (bold with lots of energy)
Kirk's Jam: Small Steps! (with joyful exhuberance) 'I think music is an instrument. It can create the initial thought patterns that can change the thinking of the people.' (Coltrane)
Carl’s Song (a haunting, haunted song)
Wen: when the chemistry is just right! (all the songs come together)

The pieces reflect the occupations and interests of the players. Carl’s Cycle Ride depicts a sunlit journey through trees. Halfway through the piece I reverse all the music as Carl turns homewards! Kirk’s love of Coltrane is reflected in a quirky interpretation of Coltrane’s own Giant Steps in Kirk’s Jam: Small Steps and Wen’s work as a scientist brings the piece to a close with a repeat of all the solo songs combined like elements to form a whole when the chemistry is just right! The title relates to the Trio’s name.
