Masters of the Air is a powerful and hugely successful World War II drama created for Apple TV+ by John Shiban and John Orloff. A companion to the critically acclaimed Band of Brothers and The Pacific, the series brings to life the courageous story of the U.S. Air Force’s 100th Bomb Group—famously known as the “Bloody Hundredth” for the extraordinary sacrifices they made in the line of duty.
This wind band arrangement was born during my time serving in the Royal Air Force. In May 2024, the Central Band of the Royal Air Force was invited to provide music for the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace—an occasion that coincided with both the anniversary of Victory in Europe (8 May) and the upcoming 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings (6 June). It felt only right that the RAF should perform Soar, and that moment inspired me to reach out to the composer.
The arrangement is designed specifically for military band, acknowledging that some military ensembles may not use every instrument found in a traditional wind band. Parts marked “optional” may be omitted when needed, though including them will add extra depth and colour to the music. In a military band setting, Flute 1 and 2 should be performed on piccolo where possible.
