In the musical The Sound of Music, “So Long, Farewell”, is performed for dinner guests by the children of the host, Captain von Trapp. As the children are heading off to bed, one by one they sing their goodbyes. After the youngest barely stays awake for her final verse, the children give one final, yawning goodbye and the party guests in turn responds “goodbye” before sitting down for dinner. [Source: The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization] In this arrangement, the “So Long, Farewell” melody moves between each of the five instrumental parts, similar to how the melody in the vocal version from the musical moves from one of the children to the next as well as covers the orchestral phrases and accompaniments.
