In this tune, Sneaky Cactus, I've written it to help your students explore third position without ever really having to leave it. The first measure helps students locate third position, and then they get to stay there.
The inspiration for the title comes from a running joke I have with some friends, because I once misheard one of them and thought I heard him say "sneaky cactus." Spoiler, he didn't, but the joke stuck around. I wrote the tune as an hommage to that, and decided to give it that Spanish, desert sound with a cameo of "Espana Cani" along with the sneaky sound of the recurrence of half steps.
The cacuts bit is referenced by the mostly continual staccatissimo sound of pizzicato and staccato bow strokes throughout, giving it that spiky, prickly feel.
If your students are ready for third position and want a fun tune to explore it with, look no further than Sneaky Cactus.
