“This series of 10 short pieces was made as a stub for filling the absence of multi-part kazoo pieces. According to the composer, the classical world has been acting deprecatory towards new instruments. First, the clarinet, then the saxophone, and still many more are not accepted by conservative listeners. It’s time that people start to discover the beauty of new timbres, giving traditional settings and forms new entertaining context. Swunk believes himself the chosen advocate to bring instruments like the otamatone, the stroh violin, jazz harpsichord, the turkey, and, yes, the kazoo to the classical audience.”
These words were stated under the pseudonym Funky Swunk at the online premiere of a selection of these pieces as performed by members of the Untitled Virtual Ensemble. After this premiere, an extra piece was added (Ⅸ. Bonus Track), making the suite a nice uneven 11 short pieces.
The goal of this collection of pieces is in part to show that the kazoo can in fact be used for a new sound in a classical setting. A well-written piece will still sound as such, regardless of the instruments used. However, the main aspect of performing either a selection of these pieces (in any order) or the suite as a whole should be the fun in performing. Of course, this shouldn’t be at the cost of the musical quality, but I do wholeheartedly hope these pieces bring as much joy to the musicians and any audience as it brought me while composing them.
