Concert/Tribute Work
Slep is a deeply personal work, composed in loving memory of Charlene—a cherished elderly Maltese dog who passed away in 2020. The title comes from the affectionate nickname “slep,” used when Charlene would rest, and the music serves as both a tribute and a reflection on her peaceful presence and passing.
The piece opens and closes with a gentle, bell-like ostinato in tubular bells and glockenspiel, symbolising the quiet entrance and farewell of a companion. Between these moments, the music blooms with lyrical passion and noble fanfares, coloured especially by the tenor horn section, which brings warmth, softness, and strength throughout. The central section becomes a quiet, prayerful space, with a subtle nod to I Dreamed a Dream from Les Misérables, evoking themes of memory, loss, and grace.
