Saxophone quartet transcription by Florent Louman
Founded in 2015, the Zahir Quartet aims to evolve the saxophone quartet genre. Whether interpreting original repertoire or transcribing chamber music for their formation, the four saxophonists of the quartet demonstrate their curiosity and creativity.
Originally composed for piano, Sketches in Sepia reveals the refined sensitivity and expressive depth of Florence Price (1887?1953), the first African-American composer to have one of her works performed by a major symphony orchestra.
In this intimate piece, Florence Price blends romantic harmony, delicate lyricism and idioms borrowed from African-American spirituals. The arrangement for saxophone quartet highlights the rich timbres of the instrumentation, whilst preserving the warmth and subtlety of the original piano writing. The melodious lines unfold with fluidity across the parts, creating an atmosphere that is both nostalgic and contemplative - a true "sonic portrait" painted in the sepia tones of memory.
