Six Sonatas, Op. 7 was originally written for three flutes (flauto traverso). Although they are called “sonatas,” their structure is closer to a “suite” (a collection of short dance pieces). Op. 7 No. 1: Gravement, Allemande (Gayment), Lentement, Gavotte en Rondeau, Gayment Op. 7 No. 2: Modérément, Rondeau (Gayment), Lentement, Gigue Op. 7 No. 3: Allemande (Gravement), Légèrement, Lentement, Gavotte Op. 7 No. 4: Doucement, Courante, Allemande (Gravement), 1st & 2nd Menuet Op. 7 No. 5: Allemande (Modérément), Légèrement, Lentement, Gigue Op. 7 No. 6: Modérément, Courante, Tendrement, Gigue All of these pieces are not only beautiful, but also very interesting to play. The three parts interact with each other in a clever way, so performers can enjoy playing together as an ensemble. The string ensemble versions of these six works were first published separately in 2009. In this edition, all six pieces are combined into one collection for convenience. The arrangements have also been revised. They make full use of the wide range of string instruments and give each part more independence. As in the 2009 version, many ornaments from the original flute music are omitted, because they are not always necessary for string instruments. The parts are written within easy ranges (up to 3rd position for violin and viola, and 4th position for cello), so even beginners can enjoy playing these pieces. The original was for 3 flutes, which was arranged for 2 violins and cello.
