A serious, Romantic showpiece that lets advanced violists sound like the soloist they've trained to become.

Composed in 1892 (and later orchestrated in 1899), Sitt's Konzertstück is a single-movement concert work in the German Romantic tradition—richly melodic, beautifully written for the instrument, and confidently "on the stage" in its musical ambition. It's regarded by scholars as one of Sitt's most enduring works, and among his most virtuosic for the viola—making it a compelling choice for post-Grade 8 through diploma / early professional players looking for repertoire that feels substantial, idiomatic to the instrument, and genuinely rewarding to perform.

Musically, the writing is full of cantilena line and expressive register changes, giving the soloist plenty of opportunity to develop a warm, centred sound across the instrument. And here's the practical win: despite its concert credentials, the piece makes minimal use of double-stops, which keeps the technical focus on projection, phrasing, and control—rather than sheer acrobatic chord-work. For teachers, that's gold: it's virtuoso in effect, but pedagogically sensible in execution.

Why does Sitt matter here? Because he wasn't writing about the viola from the outside. Alongside his long tenure at the Leipzig Conservatory (1884–1921), he also performed as a violist in the Brodsky Quartet—and, crucially, he contributed to the late-19th-century revival of the viola as a credible solo voice. This Konzertstück carries that intent: it treats the viola as a true protagonist, not an afterthought.
