Composed by Vince Peterson. This edition: pdf. Broadway, Contemporary, Folk, Musical/Show. 9 pages. Vince Peterson #5205067. Published by Vince Peterson (A0.882294).This is a setting of a Walt Whitman text excerpted from his epic poem, "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloomed." It is, among other things, a subtle comment on race inequality from the pen of a poet who fought in the Civil War and laid his own life down for American freedom. It begins and ends with a high soprano solo which signifies the bird itself, and bookmarks a quick-moving, infectiously rhythmic collaboration between the chorus and the piano reminiscent of American styles such as that of Sondheim. It's a real crowd pleaser!
