Silent Durations XVI (a Zen experience) is for any combination of 3 treble clef and 2 bass clef instruments, voices or sound objects. The work was written for and premiered by John M. Kennedy with the CSULA New Music Ensemble. Each movement has a distinct character. The first features both legato phrases and staccato punctuations. The second focuses on the instrumental and rhythmical color possibilities of the same E pitch with the occasional neighboring F. Homophonic movement is featured in the last movement sometimes breaking up into smaller ensembles. These Silent Duration pieces are notable for their incorporation of silence as an integral part of the compositional fabric. The duration is 11'08. There is also a piano 4-hands version of this piece (Silent Durations XVIa)
