Gabriel Fauré composed this Sicilienne in 1893 as incidental music for Molière’s play Le Bourgeois gentilhomme. It was first published in 1898 after it had been adapted as incidental music for inclusion in Maurice Maeterlinck's play Pelléas et Mélisande. This new arrangement for intermediate piano solo is based on the composer’s own transcription of his orchestral score. Some accidentals omitted erroneously in the original published edition have now been added and some elements have been simplified with no detrimental effect to the harmony and stylistic character of the music. The layout has been designed with consideration to clarity and legibility, including page turns and technical facility. Fingering has been left entirely to each performer to add as they feel necessary according to their own preferences, especially as much of the legato effect can be produced with skilful use of the sustain pedal. With a performance time of approximately three and a half minutes, this Sicilienne would be suitable for inclusion in a school concert recital. Wedding pianists may find this arrangement useful as part of their selection of Preludal music to be played prior to the ceremony as guests arrive.
