During the English Civil War an artillery station was sited in Pangbourne to guard the Thames Crossing.
This lively march begins with bold chromatic runs with B♭ instruments in the key of C minor. There follows a section of counterpoint between solo cornet and euphonium, a quiet link to the bass melody. A bright fanfare introduces the Trio in the relative major key. Flugel and solo horn play a simple melody over a technical euphonium solo. The D.C. reprises the original minor themes.
