Written in 1982 by Oscar-winning lyricist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken, "Sheridan Square" is one of the most quietly devastating songs ever written about the AIDS crisis. Composed in the early days of the epidemic, as Ashman watched friends disappear from the West Village block near the Stonewall Inn that had become the heart of New York's gay community, the song was never published or professionally recorded in his lifetime. Ashman, who died of AIDS in 1991 at age 40, sang it only on a private demo. It was performed at his memorial service. This TTBB choral arrangement brings that song to men's and tenor-bass ensembles for the first time, giving choirs a vehicle to honor one of the most important and overlooked pieces of LGBTQIA+ musical history. Deeply moving, beautifully crafted, and wholly appropriate for concert programming centered on LGBTQIA+ history, the AIDS crisis, or memorial occasions. A profound and necessary addition to any tenor-bass repertoire.
