Since Menotti gave his inspired and magical opera, Amahl and the Night Visitors, as a Christmas gift to the world in 1951, the only excerpts that have been available in arrangements for piano have been the uncredited and woefully inadequate versions in Schirmer's official "Selections" - a slim volume that was obviously thrown together in great haste, and which is so riddled with editorial problems and glitches of all kinds that it is almost useless. The version of the "Shepherds' Dance" contained in that "official" publication is over-simplified and heavily cut. This new arrangement keeps as many of the original notes -- and as much of the fresh and spicy mediterranean flavour -- as is possible in a piano transcription. The audio sample gives an idea of the vigorous and exciting culmination of this three-and-a-half minute piece, which begins in a plaintive and improvisatory mood before becoming a delightful jig.
