By Thomas Dolby. Composed by Jonathan Kerr and Thomas Dolby Robertson. Arranged by Thomas Ruggieri. This edition: pdf. Pop, Rock. 33 pages. Thomas Ruggieri #1102397. Published by Thomas Ruggieri (A0.1529033).
This 80's techno-pop hit and video were all the rage on MTV! Do this one with your marching band with or without a rhythm section. It's a lot of fun with some keyboards and a guitarist (Talk Box optional). Each time I did it, the production on the field got more intricate including full-blown vocals. At least let your students yell "Science!" at the appropriate spots!
Near the end is a drum break as heard in at least one of Thomas Dolby's versions of the song. I had my kids do the 'robot' as one of their dance moves while the percussion section did their thing. A drum synth, MalletStation, or some triggers to get electronic drum sounds ala Dolby would be cool there, too.
The flutes and trombones have some close divisi notes and the Clarinet 1 part has a note or two that young players may find tricky to get. They can take it down an octave as in the Clarinet 2 part.
Again, this one works great with simple, standard marching band instrumentation if you don't have an electric front ensemble.
