Published by ThomasJPitts (A0.1830007).She was written by Charles Aznavour with English lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer and was first released in 1974 as the theme tune for the British television series Seven Faces of Woman. The song proved an immediate success, reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart, where it remained for four weeks, and also topping the Irish charts.
Aznavour recorded the song in several languages, including French, German, Italian and Spanish. Despite its chart success in the UK and Ireland, She enjoyed a more modest reception elsewhere at the time of release.
The song later found renewed international popularity through its association with the film Notting Hill. While Aznavour’s original version accompanies the film’s opening sequence in the UK release, a cover by Elvis Costello was used for the closing credits and, following audience response, for the opening sequence in the US release. Costello’s understated and lyrical interpretation brought the song to a new generation and became widely popular across Europe.
This baritone solo arrangement for brass band is based on Elvis Costello’s version, allowing the soloist to explore the song’s expressive, vocal-inspired phrasing while supported by a warm and sensitive brass band accompaniment. It was written in late 2025 for my wife, a baritone player, Lisa Pitts to perform with Grange Moor Brass Band.
