Orchestra, String Orchestra - Level 3 - Digital Download
SKU: A0.1885879
Composed by Edmund Severn. Arranged by Paul Wood. This edition: pdf, streaming. Romantic Period. 20 pages. MyMusicScores.com #1444577. Published by MyMusicScores.com (A0.1885879).
Severn's Perpetuum Mobile is a short, bright, relentlessly-moving piece that gives a Grade 3 violinist the experience of a real solo feature with orchestra, without the stamina demands of a concerto movement. This arrangement sets the violin against a string orchestra, giving the piece considerably more presence and energy than the standard piano version.
The solo part is in A major and stays entirely in first position. It's a continuous stream of quavers at a lively tempo, and that's where the work is: keeping the bow stroke light and even in the middle of the bow while navigating a steady run of string crossings. The crossings are the point. This is one of those pieces where the technical challenge is well-disguised by the musical character, so students tend to practise it willingly. Played cleanly at tempo, it sounds far more polished than the grade level suggests. For a developing player, it's a better study in bow arm coordination than many pieces written explicitly as exercises.
The ensemble parts sit comfortably at around Grade 2–3. The orchestra has a clear harmonic and rhythmic supporting role, with nothing technically awkward to distract from listening to the soloist. For a school or youth orchestra, it's an easy rehearsal win.
At two minutes, it fits neatly into almost any school concert or festival programme. The character is cheeky and energetic, and audiences respond well to that kind of momentum. Teachers looking for an alternative to the Böhm Perpetuum Mobile will find this a more accessible option: it covers similar technical ground but sits at a lower standard.
