Arrangement by Daniel Kaplan for woodwind quintet of Brahms's Seven Fantasies for Piano, Op. 116. This remarkable set marks the start of the late Brahms outpouring of short piano character pieces---a form to which, from Op. 116 on, he was to devote most of his output. The Op. 116 set includes three Capriccios and four Intermezzi, of varying characters, from impassioned and dramatic, even anguished, to calm, meditative, wistful, mysterious, and elegiac. The pieces are striking in their variety of moods and their complex harmonies and unconventional rhythmic features---as well as their "bang-up" ending! And No. 5 is arguably the strangest piece in all of Brahms! Perhaps surprisingly, they work well as a woodwind quintet. The third Capriccio of this set is Brahms's final work in that form and is reminiscent of the Passacaglia movement of his Fourth Symphony as well as his Paganini variations and the finale of the Clarinet Quintet.

The arrangement, intended for advanced and advanced intermediate players, features flute, oboe (doubling on English horn), clarinet in B-flat and A (with an alternate part entirely in B-flat---albeit with lots of sharps here and there), horn, and bassoon. As often happens in arrangements of piano music, the horn part lies rather low, ranging from (concert) F2 to A4. The flute part extends to C7.

This is part of Kaplan's project to make classics from other genres available to woodwind players. He has arranged many other great works for this ensemble, including favorites from Bach's Well Tempered Clavier and organ preludes and fugues, plus music of Vivaldi, Mozart, Schubert, Brahms, Dvorak, and little-known 20th-Century composer John Davison. All are posted on YouTube and available for sale on these online sheet-music platforms.
