Looking for something to do next I discovered that I did not have a string sextet in my portfolio. Brahms wrote two, Dvorak has one, so do Rimsky-Korsakov and Borodin. Others include Arnold Schoenberg, Bohuslav Martinů, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Vincent D'Indy and many others. The most famous of all is of course Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Souvenir de Florence."
My work is based on the Tchaikovsky, at least in the title. It will be like my "Symphony No. 7 ... Roman Holidays" (2008, rev. 2013), a travelogue of the Eternal City. In the symphony I highlighted six of my favorite locations in Rome: The Fontana Paola, Piazza Navona, the Protestant Cemetery, the Turtle Fountain in the Jewish Ghetto, Apollo and Daphne in the Galleria Borghese, and the Spanish Steps in front of Villa Medici.
For the "sestetto" I am highlighting six other wonderful locations in the city:
I. Vittorio Emanuele II in Piazza Venezia II. Bernini's Beata Ludovica Albertoni in Trastevere III. Zaha Hadid's MAXXI IV. Rome War Cemetery in Testaccio V. Borromini's Sant'Ivo alla Sapienza VI. Canova's Ercole e Lica in the Galleria Nazionale dell'Arte Moderna
