A principios del siglo XX, Arnold Schönberg decidió romper con siglos de jerarquía musical. En el sistema tradicional, unas notas son más importantes que otras. En el dodecafonismo, las doce notas de la escala cromática son iguales.
Para construir esta obra, utilicé una "serie" única: un orden específico de estos doce sonidos que debe agotarse antes de repetirse. No hay un "hogar" (tonalidad) al cual volver; hay una tensión constante, un fluir infinito donde ninguna nota tiene el poder sobre las demás.
No es casualidad que esta música naciera en la misma Viena que vio surgir a Sigmund Freud. El dodecafonismo es la banda sonora del inconsciente.
