Serengeti is a lively original work for Orff instruments and percussion inspired by African style marimba music in 12/8 meter and uses three against two African polyrhythms. Serengeti can be performed as written, or instrument entrances can be re-ordered to create a unique version for your students or ensemble. Instrumentation can be adjusted or enhanced to match what you have available, and parts are written to accommodate students with varying mallet percussion experience. Extend the length of Serengeti by inserting a non-pitched instrument “jam” in the middle of the piece, or create choreographed movement. The spirit of the music captures the animal life that inhabits the Serengeti. Students can use their imagination to select the animal that represents their instrument part. In concert, apply that visualization by describing to the audience how each instrument part represents the diverse variety of animals that live on the Serengeti to create a “harmony of life”.
