True Serendipity!
With a title like 'Serendipity', how can you not have fun with this delightful piece? It provides an ideal means for combining ensembles for a grand finale at any flute program or festival. True serendipity? Our summer festival flutists performed on Boomwhackers while our alumni and guest artistsincluding composer & adjunct flute professor Kelly Via played head joints and C flutes. How's that for Serendipity?! This is a fun piece to play and a great way to close a concert with two groups who have never even met before! Suggestion: Study the Boomwhacker part carefully before rehearsal. I penciled in Low-high-Low/Pink-orange-Pink and other cues that made teaching challenging rhythms easier. Also, keep it simple when you explain the trill. I learned the hard way :)-- simply have one hold theirs vertically (ex: lime green) while the other person trills with both of their notes at the same time--one on each side. Visualizing that in your mind ahead of rehearsal works wonders!
