Composed by Leopold Mozart. Arranged by Michael Clack. Three movements in classical style. Classical. Piano score and parts. With Standard Notation. Winwood Music #0212. Published by Winwood Music (WO.0212).
This edition of the Serenade by Leopold Mozart, originally written for alto trombone, is based on three movements from the so-called Seitenstetten manuscript. The manuscript contains a complete work in nine movements dating from the mid-eighteenth century, described as a ‘Serenata à 2 Violini, 2 Hautb., 2 Corni, 2 Clarini, Timpani, Trombone, Viola e Basso‘. It is thought to be one of 30 similar compositions, 29 of which are now lost (Alexander Weinmann, 1977 Eulenburg Octavo Edition no. 10137).
The two solo brass instruments featured in the Serenata are trumpet (movements four and five) and trombone (movements six, seven, and eight), the original order of the trombone movements being Adagio, Menuetto, and Allegro. In this edition the movements are reordered according to the character and key sequence of similar three-movement compositions from the same period, with the Menuetto placed last. The trombone features only in the Trio section of the original Menuetto – the suggested trombone part in this arrangement is derived from the texture of the orchestral score.
