Agathe Ursula Backer/Agathe Backer Grøndahl (1847-1907) was born in Holmestrand in 1847 into a cultured and artistic family, where she and her sisters showed early talent in both music and drawing. After moving to Christiania in 1857, she studied with leading Norwegian musicians before continuing her training in Berlin, where she gained recognition for her performance of Beethoven's Emperor Concerto. Returning to Norway in 1868, she made a successful debut under Edvard Grieg. Further studies took her to Florence and Leipzig, and in 1873 she became a pupil of Franz Liszt. After marrying Olaus Andreas Grøndahl in 1874, she built an impressive international career, performing widely across the Nordic countries as well as in London and Paris.
By the late 1880s, Backer Grøndahl was celebrated as one of the finest pianists of her time, praised by George Bernard Shaw for both her playing and compositions. Despite recurring health issues and eventual hearing loss in the 1890s, she continued performing until 1901 before turning to teaching, where she became a highly influential figure. Alongside her career as a pianist, she composed around 400 works, mainly songs and piano pieces, and played a key role in Norway’s musical “golden age.” Her early music reflects mid-19th-century European traditions, while her later works move toward a more expressive, impressionistic style—leading Pauline Hall to describe her as Norway’s first true impressionist.
