Dunaevsky (1900-1955) was a prominent Soviet composer and conductor in the 1930s and 1940s, best known for his work in operetta and film comedies. He enjoyed significant success, often collaborating with director Grigori Aleksandrov. Regarded as one of the greatest composers in Soviet history, many of his songs remain popular and are highly regarded in Russia and the former Soviet Union.

Throughout his career, Dunaevsky composed 14 operettas, 3 ballets, 3 cantatas, 80 choruses, 80 songs and romances, music for 88 plays and 42 films, 43 works for light music orchestra, and 12 for jazz orchestra. His compositions also include 17 melodeclamations, 52 symphonic pieces, 47 piano works, and a string quartet.

Dunaevsky was one of the first Soviet composers to incorporate jazz into his music. His melodies, which were both accessible and memorable, helped secure his widespread popularity. He composed music for three iconic films of the pre-war Stalin era—Jolly Fellows, Circus, and Volga-Volga, the latter of which was said to be Stalin's favorite film—all directed by Grigori Aleksandrov.
