The musical, composed by Stephen Sondheim, is anadaptation of Ingmar Bergman's film ‘Smiles of a Summer Night’ and tells the romantic stories of many couples, with a main focus on the actress Desirée and the lawyer Fredrik. In the ballad, Send In The ClownsDesirée reflects on the ironies and disappointments of her life, after Fredrik’s initial rejection. The song is later reprised as a coda after Fredrik's young wife runs away and he is finally free to acceptDesirée'soffer.
Send In The Clowns became Sondheim's most popular song after Frank Sinatra recorded it in 1973 and Judy Collins' version charted in 1975 and 1977. It has since become a jazz standardwith subsequent recordings by Grace Jones, Barbra Streisand, Cher, Dame Judi Dench and many other artists, and is a guaranteed audience-favourite!
