In 1868, the United States Marine Corps adopted Semper Fidelis as its motto. Twenty years later (1888), John Philip Sousa, then director of the U.S. Marine Band, composed one of his most famous marches, entitled Semper Fidelis, in honor of this motto. Sousa himself proudly recalled the first performance of the famous march:
<< We were marching down Pennsylvania Avenue and had just turned the corner of the Treasury Building. In the gallery of honor were President Harrison, many members of the diplomatic corps, a good portion of the House and Senate, and a large number of invited guests. I had timed the march so well that the trumpet theme was heard for the first time just as we were facing the gallery. And immediately the ten trumpets blew and the theme was played in unison. They had never heard anything like it before, and when the crowd in the stands recovered from their surprise, they leaped to their feet and, led by the president himself, showed their satisfaction with a wave of applause.>>.
