His Grand Quartet is a better piece. But, this Trio is worthy of performance at an advanced HS contest or at the collegiate level. Not destined to become a classic, this Waterson, clearly edited and fun to both play and hear in performance demands three competent clarinetists for each movement. If you are a fan of English composition during the Victorian age (Waterson at one time was the bandmaster for the bands in colonial India)written by someone who understands the instrument extremely well, purchase it and perform it. It lays well on the clarinet but sounds to the audience as a difficult piece. If you are doing a college recital, this would make a good selection.
