Having lived for a time on the sea it seemed logical to compose music inspired by it. “Sea States” consists of four movements: "Reflets d’Argent,” Night Calm, Boats at Anchor,” “Waterspout,” and "Bloom of Jellyfish/Passing Storm.” Reflets d’argent is French for reflections of silver. The movement is intended to be a portrait of sunlight glinting on the sea. “Night Calm, Boats at Anchor” is intended to convey not only nocturnal calm but the sometimes spooky atmosphere of such a scene. There are repeated notes in the piece which are my impression of ropes banging against a mast. A waterspout, of which the third movement is a depiction, is a tornado-like occurrence on the water. A bloom of jellyfish is a large group of jellyfish. In the opening section of the last movement there are some musical jellyfish “stings.” As the title implies, the end of the last movement describes a storm that appears out of nowhere and then quickly disperses.
