Although it's titled Menuetto, the third movement of Schubert's Symphony No. 3 is a true scherzo. The tempo marking is Vivace, and the quirky accented third beats would flummox anyone who tried to dance to it. But the trio is a graceful Ländler, a charming duet for oboe and bassoon. The piece lends itself very well to a woodwind quintet arrangement suitable for advanced high school players and for college or adult quintets. It's transposed down a step from the original D major.
