The well-known folksong Meadowlands is the basis for this spectacular Russian fantasy. The cantabile opening is particularly nice for the woodwinds, and all the parts are quite playable for bands at the easy level. The bold nature of the melody allows the brass to open up their sound a bit, while the con spirito section offers interesting counterpoint and exciting rhythms. A general sense of the bleakness of a Russian landscape in winter, and the strength and determination of the Russian people, comes through.

Deze bewerking van een oud Russisch volkslied beschrijft een schraal Russich landschap en het sterke karakter en de wilskracht van de mensen die er wonen. Het stuk bevat boeiende contrasten tussen een plechtige opening, koraalachtige,ritmische, maar ook rustige passages in het middendeel, en een krachtig slot.

Diese ausdrucksstarke Bearbeitung eines alten russischen Volksliedes für sinfonisches Blasorchester erzählt von einer kargen russischen Landschaft und der Stärke und Willenskraft ihrer Bewohner. Das ganze Stück ist geprägt von interessanten Kontrasten zwischen einer kantablen Eröffnung, choralartigen, rhythmischen, aber auch ruhigen Passagen im Mittelteil und einem kraftvollen Schluss. En 1934, le compositeur russe Lev Knipper (1898-1974) conclut sa Symphonie n° 4 par le chant Poljushko Polje (Plaine, ma plaine) sur un texte du poète Viktor Goussef. Depuis, cet air est devenu un des plus célèbres chants du patrimoine traditionnel russe. Elliot del Borgo s’en est également inspiré pour la composition de son tableau musical Scenes of Russia.
