Composed by Granville Bantock. Arranged by Matthew S. Lyttle. This edition: pdf. 20th Century, Classical. 59 pages. Matthew Lyttle #1429279. Published by Matthew Lyttle (A0.1869980).

Granville Bantock was one of Britain’s great musical romantics — a composer whose vivid imagination, love of folk melody, and flair for orchestral colour helped shape the rich musical tapestry of the early 20th century. Deeply fascinated by the landscapes and legends of Scotland, Bantock frequently turned to Celtic and Gaelic sources for inspiration, creating music that blends sweeping lyricism with an unmistakable sense of place.

The fourth movement, “Baloo Baloo”, takes its title from the traditional Scottish lullaby “Baloo Baleerie” (or “Baloo, my wee bairnie”). In Bantock’s hands, the gentle cradle-song becomes something far more than a simple folk tune arrangement. The movement opens with a tender melodic line — hushed, lilting, and full of warmth — that drifts like a mother’s voice soothing her child to sleep. Bantock’s harmonies shimmer with that subtle melancholy so characteristic of Scottish song: beauty tinged with wistfulness.

As the music unfolds, the lullaby grows into an evocative portrait of Highland serenity — distant mountains veiled in mist, the soft murmur of a loch at night, and the tender humanity at the heart of folk tradition. Yet even amid its tranquility, there’s a quiet grandeur; Bantock captures both the intimacy of the cradle-song and the breadth of nature’s vast silence.

The work has been arranged for an expanded instrumentation, primarily featuring winds, including oboe and soprano saxophone especially. Note: Timpani and Glockenspiel have been included, although tacet, as the work would naturally be played attacca into the reel.
