This form is influenced by arrangements by John Ireland and Benjamin Britten, where the true expression comes from the variation in the piano part and the repetition in the vocal part. As with any folk song, freedom of expression from performers is expected!
The opening is bold and multi-modal, almost primal. At letter D, the style relaxes into something more modern ballad-like, before gaining dramatic tension towards a recapitulation of the opening figure from letter G. This time, the accompaniment is strictly Dorian in A, before a muddy modal ‘A’ pedal leads us to a final section at Letter I. Here the full chromatic, music hall style finishes the piece in a dramatic fashion in a D Major tonality.
