Composed by Georg Frideric Handel. Arranged by Egbert Lewark. This edition: pdf. Baroque. 7 pages. Egbert Lewark #1377738. Published by Egbert Lewark (A0.1817614).
Georg Frideric Handels famous Sarabande was originally written for solo harpsichord. It is the third of four dances from the 4th Suite in D minor (HWV 437), which was probably composed in Hamburg in 1705/07. The arrangement was made for brass quintet. However, it is also possible to try out other instrumentations (e.g. with clarinets and saxophones or other woodwinds; choral instrumentations are also possible). The freedoms afforded by the Baroque style are used to allow the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th voices to perform their ‘solo sections’ in a diminished form in the repeated sections. It is possible to play the Sarabande without these embellishments. In this case, the original parts can simply be repeated. This corresponds to the version in the ‘performance score’. The metronome and dynamic markings as well as the accents are provided by the arranger. However, the accents are important in order to make the hemiolas in these bars clear.
Part set
1 in C (trumpet, oboe) and Bb (trumpet, clarinet, soprano saxophone)
2 in C (trumpet, oboe) and Bb (trumpet, clarinet, soprano saxophone)
3 in F (horn) and Eb (horn, alto saxophone)
4 in C (trombone, bassoon, cello) and Bb (tenor horn, euphonium)
5 in C (tuba, double bass)
The score corresponds to Handels original music and is merely orchestrated.
The repetitions are written out in the actual score. This is the version with the ornamentation.
