Published by The Lakes Brass Quintet (A0.1599573).Sanctus is an intertextual exploration of the offstage trumpet solo from the second movement of Respighi's Pines of Rome and the solo's source material: The Sanctus from Missa cum jubilo. The piece begins with the original chant, presented here as a solo French horn, and is transformed into a powerful reimagining of Respighi's trumpet solo. The harmonic language of the piece, specifically the multiple modulations by chromatic mediant, is meant to invoke the heroic style of film composers such as John Williams and Alan Silvestri. Fans of Silvestri's composition may recognize elements of one of his stoic themes used throughout the piece to underscore the theme of heroism. The piece premiered on November 1, 2022 as part of the 175th anniversary mass at St. Mary's of the Seven Sorrows in Downtown Nashville. Originally titled Sanctus from Pines of Rome, the piece exists today simply as Sanctus.
