About the piece:
Below San Antonio and the surrounding area there is a massive system of porous limestone saturated with water known as the Edwards Aquifer. Within the aquifer is one of the most ecologically diverse subterranean ecosystems in the world. It is home to numerous unique species found nowhere else in the world. Of all the fascinating wildlife found here, none fascinate me more than the widemouth blindcat (Satan eurystomus). These fish are extremely rare and not much is known about them. These blind catfish inhabit a part of the aquifer known as the “bad water zone,” an area where fresh water and saline water converge. In this difficult to survive environment, widemouth blindcats have adapted to thrive as one of the top carnivores in their ecosystem. San Antonio Waters was inspired by this unique species.
San Antonio Waters was commissioned by Dr. Cehuai Zhang for left-hand-only alto saxophone and piano to perform at the China-United States Saxophone Art Festival hosted by Dr. Eric Nestler at the University of North Texas on October 2-5, 2024.
