Composed by Christine Hulmer. This edition: pdf. 21st Century, Historic, Multicultural, World. Full Orchestra. 87 pages. Christine Hulmer #1151661. Published by Christine Hulmer (A0.1580147).
This was written to honor my mother's life as you will see on the music notes page. It can be done with a full orchestra or can be done with a concert band. The sliding violin parts could be done on an electric keyboard too.
The piece begins with war in Okinawa. You will hear the bombs, the cries, the order to hide. You will hear what I remember as her lullaby to the babies. Picture her sitting on the floor and rocking a child, saying “sh, sh, sh” and then singing in the syllable “nigh”.
You will hear childhood melodies that she taught us. You will hear the Marine Corp Hymn embedded in those melodies.
The 7/8 section of the piece was written to honor growing up with my five brothers and one sister, always lively, sometimes loud, and truly loving.
The section that includes Taiko drums can be done with tom drums of various sizes. We were blessed to know some of our cousins who came to stay with us and teach us their Taiko dances. If you have anyone in your area I encourage you to involve them in your concert with this piece and even more with dances of their own.
Near the end of the piece you will hear a dissonance of sounds that is meant to symbolize the clash of two countries but it is brief and it all works out to come back to the quiet soothing of the children.
