Sailing, best known from the Rod Stewart recording, is written for Bb Bagpipe and Brass Quintet. There is little music available for this instrumentation which is unfortunate as bagpipes and brass combine beautifully, both in traditional and contemporary settings.
The Great Highland Bagpipe chanter tunes to a scale of 9 notes from low G to high A, the A tuned to a tonic of around 470-480 Hz, as compared to western music A4 of 440Hz. It is therefore necessary to play a Bb bagpipe chanter when playing with brass instruments.
