Title: Russian Rhapsody (Rachmaninov, arr. Hiew for symphony orchestra)
Russian Rhapsody is one of Rachmaninov's early compositions that he wrote when he was only 18 years old while still a student at the Moscow Conservatory . Compared to his other piano duos, namely Suite No. 1, Op. 5 and Suite No. 2, Op. 17, Russian Rhapsody is relatively lesser-known and less performed. Despite the title, it is sometimes debated as more of a theme and variations rather than a typical 'rhapsody' due to the repetition of the main theme throughout the piano duo. From an orchestrator's point of view, however, this is usually music to their ears (quite literally), as such is the case for Tzejia, because it meant ideas could be presented in many ways within the same piece.
Having encountered the piece through a recording during lockdown in 2021, Tzejia immediately knew that this piece has every potential to be turned into an orchestral work fit for an overture. In 2023, during the Keyboard Faculty Showcase as part of the annual Piano Festival at RCS that she finally had the privilege to listen to a live performance of this much-beloved piano duo by Ms Sinae Lee and Professor Aaron Shorr. That performance itself meant something deeper for Tzejia: not only it further solidified the orchestrated version in her head for years, realising the orchestrated version was just a matter or time.
The initial draft was completed in just three days, in the midst of navigating through life's challenging moments. It was eventually handed in as coursework for as her Personal Creative Project optional module, supervised by Dr Oliver Searle.

*The arranger’s name is natively Chinese and follows Chinese naming conventions (where surnames are placed before given names), i.e. ‘Hiew’ is her surname and ‘Tzejia’ is her given name, and shall remain in this order when her full name is displayed. When performing this piece in public, the names of the composer and arranger must be mentioned jointly on the programme. In this case it should be ’Rachmaninov/Hiew’ or anything that conveys the same representation, and not ‘Rachmaninov/Tzejia’.
