Composed by Sergei Prokofiev. Arranged by Philip Le Bas. This edition: pdf, streaming. 20th Century. 96 pages. Philip Le Bas #1189945. Published by Philip Le Bas (A0.1621102).

A new arrangement by Philip Le Bas of four movements from Sergei Prokofiev's well-known orchestral score to his ballet "Romeo and Juliet". It is arranged here for wind sextet: flute, oboe, clarinet in Bb, horn in F, bass clarinet in Bb and bassoon.

1. Montagues and Capulets
2. Dance
3. Friar Laurence
4. Farewell

The "mini-suite" starts with the famous dance of the Montagues and Capulets, two families dead set against each other; their belligerent pride is evident from the start of the famous main theme. However, the middle section projects a mysterious, softer theme, hinting that there is more to these families than just stridency.

The second movement is simply called "Dance". It expresses the joyful exuberance of the younger characters in Shakespeare's play, especially the two youthful protagonists.

Next comes Friar Laurence, sombre and slow, but somehow likeable. The bassoon presents the principal theme here (as in Prokofiev's original), and it is subsequently developed into a full lusciousness by the other instruments before the main theme returns.

Finally the scene in which Romeo bids the fateful "Farewell" to Juliet is presented. There is a profound intensity to this movement, perhaps responding passionately and romantically in contrast to the earlier angry passion of the two families. However, the movement ends in quiet tension, as we await the tragic outcome of the couple's plans.
