Romanza was written as a ballad for the composer�s wife. The first theme is already introduced in the first two bars, with a descending line in the woodwind. After this the chorale-like theme returns in the alto oboe and horn. The theme is then repeated, but this time in a close harmony setting in a minor key. Then comes the second theme, which is extremely melodious. All the parts of the orchestra complement each other in rendering this theme in its entirety. This second theme is the basis on which to launch a development that ultimately reaches a climax based on the last four bars of the first theme, after which the theme returns once more, though this time as a solemnchorale by the brass. The finale of the work is a variant of the beginning, which completes the circle.

Romanza is geschreven als een ballade aan de echtgenote van de componist. Het eerste thema wordt al voorgesteld in de eerste twee maten, met een dalende lijn in de houtblazersgroep. Hierna komt het koraalmatige thema terug bij dealthobo en de hoorn. Daarna wordt dit thema herhaald, maar dit keer in een closeharmony setting in mineur. Hierna komt het tweede thema, dat een erg zangerig karakter heeft. Alle groepen van het orkest vullen elkaar aan om dit themain zijn geheel ten gehore te brengen. Op basis van dit tweede thema wordt een doorwerking op gang gebracht die uiteindelijk uitmondt in een climax, gebaseerd op de laatste vier maten van het eerste thema, waarna het thema nog eenmaalterugkomt, maar nu als plechtig koraal in de kopergroep. De afsluiting van het werk is een variant op het begin, waardoor de cirkel rond is.

Romanza ist eine Ballade, die der Frau des Komponisten gewidmet ist. Das 1. Thema wird mit einer absteigenden musikalischen Line bereits in den ersten Takten vorgestellt. Dieses Thema wird vom Englischhorn zusammen mit dem Waldhorn ubernommen. Danach erklingt dieses Thema erneut, aber diesmal verwendet der Komponist sogenannte Close Harmony Akkorde. Nun folgt das 2. Thema, zu welchem alle Instrumentalgruppen beitragen, um schliesslich in einem grossen Hohepunkt zusammen zu fliessen. Das Material dieses Hohepunktes ist aus den letzten 4 Takten des 1. Themas zusammengestellt. Der Schluss dieser Komposition ist eine Art Variation des Anfangs, wodurch sich der musikalische Kreisschliesst.
