Béla Bartók composed these short but highly expressive Romanian Folk Dances in 1915, drawing inspiration from traditional music he collected in the villages of Transylvania. At that time, Transylvania was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, yet Bartók was deeply fascinated by the richness and authenticity of the Romanian folk traditions there, which he documented and later transformed into a refined work of art.
The suite consists of dances that differ in atmosphere and tempo: from the masculine energy of the Stick Dance, to the pastoral lyricism of the Dance from Bucsum, and finally to the explosive vitality of the two Fast Dances.
A particularly striking moment is the third dance, “In One Spot”. This static dance, with small steps and jumps in place, conveys a melancholic and mysterious character. In this arrangement, that mood is recreated through the use of mutes in the brass instruments. Most notably, the main melody is carried by the piccolo trumpet (in A) with mute, adding a bright and unusual color that evokes the sound of traditional Romanian wind instruments.
In this brass quintet version, the unique colors of each instrument combine to highlight both the strength of the vigorous dances and the delicacy of the lyrical ones, turning Bartók’s piano suite into a vibrant celebration of Romanian folklore through the powerful and expressive voice of the brass.
