The work is part of a cycle of four vocal pieces which Martinu wrote to texts by this poet (The Opening of the Wells, Romance of the Dandelions, Legend of the Smoke from Potato Fires and Mikes of the Mountains). These works have in common simplicity of melodic line and harmonic treatment, clear tonal grounding in each piece, structure of form and central motifs; they are also a testimony of the composer's love for his native country and the Vysocina [Highlands] region. This edition is based, in compliance with the composer's wishes, on the performance of the work by the Czech Choral Society. The sung text and forewords are printed in Czech, English and German.
