This work has been adapted from an original orchestral score by Berlioz. It is designed for recital/concert performances. However, it stands as a great work just for study by trumpet players of all levels from High School through Professional joining the great concertos of Haydn and Hummel.

Tempos indicated are for college/professional level players. Others will find that the work is adaptable at a wide range of tempos. Players should experiment to find a tempo the work for them. Players will note the possible use of octave choices and/or ossia at certain places in the work. Each player should choose what works best for their own level of performance as either works as well as the other. The historical significance of this work will be especially pleasing to audiences and may be easily recognized by some. It also offers an additional work from the classical period for programming considerations. Pianists will find the accompaniment to their liking since they may not have had the opportunity to play much by Berlioz.

If the key for the work has been changed from the original score, it has be chosen to accommodate a reasonable key for Bb players and to keep the range for Bb trumpet from f# to C2 (High C) with few exceptions. Notes: This work may surprise some trumpeters as it is perhaps not a work that players would expect to be arranged as a solo trumpet work. Have a listen, it really works very for for Trumpet and Piano and will certainly be an audience pleaser. Yes, it does include the complete original English Horn Solo, which, had Berlioz had today's modern trumpets/cornets available, he may have actually scored the solo for trumpet or cornet as it works so well in this arrangement. After the very slow and melodic opening the Allegro vivace follows to the end. The trumpet plays most of the melodies, of course, however, there were several opportunities in this arrangement for the trumpet to play the countermelodies just as effectively as the melodies. The piece has been lowered a M2 from the original to avoid 5 sharps for the Bb trumpet. However, C trumpet players may like to play the opening solo on the Bb if they would like a slightly bigger and expressive sound. Range is from high Concert A down to low f#. Several nice places where the trumpet is completely unaccompanied are also found in this arrangement. Audiences may be familiar with this work and will appreciate hearing it in a different foremat and I believe will respond to its performance by solo trumpet very favorably. Would be a great opener, closer, or encore. Playable by college level players through professionals, and possibly by advanced high schoolers. University trumpet professors and graduate assistants will find that this work will greatly impress their students as a romantic work very playable by trumpet players.
