It’s the fun game everybody knows - let’s play! This upbeat piece gets its rock ‘n roll rhythm from the syllables of the title, and the optional drum set adds a dance party beat. Set in joyful D major, easy accidentals create interesting harmonies while avoiding awkward finger patterns on the D and G strings. An exuberant celebration to start or end your concert!.
Rock, Paper, Scissors transforms a timeless game into a classic rock tune for student orchestras. Listen to the refrain, and you might want to sing along, “Rock, Paper, Scissors!”Teach students the rock style by playing in the lower part of the bow, using an accented stroke with either a martelé or marcato style. Typically, these bow strokes work best in the lower part of the bow, making sure to detach the notes throughout the entire piece. The inner string parts can play on the G-string, and the bass plays on the A-string. Reviewing posture and position changes in both the right and left arm for the lower strings is recommended. In measures 12 and 48, the bass players can avoid an extra shift by playing the A in 4th position on the D-string. Minimal bow retakes are included, but teachers may wish to add bow retakes, especially in the Rock, Paper, Scissors motive. This motive appears in many places throughout the piece, and students can explore composition techniques by identifying the many occurrences of the motive. I hope Rock, Paper, Scissors helps motivate your students to practice and love orchestra.
