Riverboat Sonata by Mel Powell Clarinet Solo - Sheet Music

By Mel Powell

The score for the Riverboat Sonata bears no date or dedication, but all clues indicate that it was written for Benny Goodman sometime during the 1960s when he and Powell were both living in New Haven, Connecticut. The lack of a premiere date, included on all but one or two of Powell's other unpublished compositions, and the absence of any mention of the piece in Goodman's various biographies, point to the conclusion that Goodman never performed the work. Clarinetist Tod Kerstetter and pianist Amanda Arrington presented the first performance of the Riverboat Sonata on 7 February 2012 on a recital in Manhattan, Kansas.
